CRISIS as a Keyword in Anglophone Public Discourse: a Semantic, Ideological and Cultural Analysis

In Anglophone public discourse, the word crisis plays a significant role in discussion of critical events and situations across wide range domains. This paper discusses word’s status as keyword mainstream unpacks its semantic contents through natural semantics metalanguage corpus-assisted collocational analysis, explores ideological cultural assumptions underpinning usage. It finds that idea “government” is central to meaning contemporary use not only signals systematic problem, but also legitimates government actions general public’s expectations, reflecting particular way thinking about state involvement liberal society shift away from classical interpretation government. The study raises questions interpreting world analysing political discourse lens related concepts.
